Department of Cardiovascular Surgery

The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery was founded in Apr. 1997 by Professor Xiao Mingdi, Vice Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery Branch of Chinese Medical Association in the "Trans-Century Talent Project" and also the first Director. Since 2008, Professional Yuan Zhongxiang has been responsible for daily work. The Department has three professors and chief physicians, seven associate chief physicians, three attending doctors and two resident doctors. There are five doctors and eight masters. There are 42 beds including 10 beds in ICU. It is  now a key department of the hospital.

With a success rate of 98%, the department is able to perform on/off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting and complete coronary bypass and secondary coronary bypass, multi-valve replacement or plasty for rheumatic heart disease, secondary valve replacement, surgical atrial fibrillation ablation, tetralogy of fallot, double outlet of right ventricle, anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, complete endocardial cushion defect, transposition of great vessels, downward displacement of tricuspid valve, single atrium, single ventricle and other congenital heart disease correction, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect and interventional blocking surgery without closing arterial duct, total aortic arch replacement, thoracoabdominal aortic replacement, trunk surgery, endovascular repair at aortic dissection, Bentall, Carbroll, Wheat surgery. At the same time, our department also performs various heart surgeries with minimally invasive incision. In Apr. 2000, our department completed one case of orthotopic homologous heart transplantation. The patient now still survives with good living quality. This is the case with the longest survival time in Shanghai. The department is also first to establish the Heart Disease Emergency Center with related department to perform emergency bypass surgery. The Center establish cooperative relationship with 18 hospitals by setting up efficient emergency network, which effectively guarantees timely treatment of the patients.

At present, the department has published more than 100 academic papers on international and domestic journals including over 10 SCI articles, with an impact factor above 20. Meanwhile, it also conducted more than 20 tasks at national, provincial and ministerial level, five of which won the award of Municipal Science and Technology.
